Steve Appleby's Weather for Pigeon Fanciers
UPDATED SATURDAY 31st JULY AT 08:30.
To start the day generally a cloudy picture with some isolated showers for most of England but conditions should improve from the west as the morning moves on. A weak front consisting of mainly cloud and some patchy light drizzle has been located moving from west to east along the channel. By midday day conditions will have improved as the poor weather moves away eastwards with sunny intervals developing clearing the flight path for pigeons crossing the channel from France. The weather over southern and central France is excellent with the sun shining affording the BBC pigeons a good start but northern France will see cloudier conditions. Winds over central France are variable but a light westerly or south westerly will become available from Northern France across the channel to England.

Once again Freialdenhofen & Söhne hit the high spots with 1st German National and provisionally 6th International in a fast and highly competitive end of season Perpignan. They are of course quite familiar with success but there is nothing better to finish the season than a win like this. “ALBERT“ a blue cheque cock 06348-08-726 V, flew some 938.538 km arriving at 1921, 1821 UK time, giving him a stunning velocity of 1249.72mpm. As you might guess “ALBERT” is bred for the job, his pedigree littered with high performing pigeons on the International scene, and now his performance will add another yet another accolade to the families history.

First ever Perpignan Day bird into UK!
A couple of years ago, when I was at Higham for marking, Bill Woodall introduced me to a young man with the words “He is going to be good.” It’s the sort of thing you take with a pinch of salt at the time but like many things Bill says it bears greater scrutiny. Bill was right, that young man has come good, and in remarkably quick time. He was, and is, Geoff Preece of GM Preece and Son who have just timed in the first UK day bird ever, we believe, from the Perpignan International. Just a fluke? Well you can believe that if it helps to re-balance your ego but the truth is it comes from serious study, a lot of hard work and some help and advice, which Geoff is eager to acknowledge.
“414 Jack Jones” greeted home by his hen.
The study comes from Geoff, a bright young man who has taken a careful look at the sport, set his targets and made a concerted effort towards achieving them. The hard work comes from Geoff of course but also from the junior member of the team, Clayton, who has demonstrated keen interest and energy in the pursuit of their goals, great qualities in a young lad while the help and advice has come from far and wide. In the first instance advice has come from Bill Woodall, one of the UK’s stalwarts of International racing, but far and wide has taken them to contacts Bill has in Germany and in particular to Stoffel & Ophoff from the North Rhine-Westphali town of Dorsten. Even here, in one of Germany’s most successful lofts, great credit is given to Bill Woodall who Wolfgang Große Ophoff acknowledges as having taught him much about the way he now evaluates pigeons. But it was not just advice that Geoff acquired here but pigeons as well and Geoff cannot thank them enough for their help, advice and pigeons.

You will have noticed no doubt that this UK National winner carries a German ring, DV 02772 08 414, and it is the 02772 part which indicates it originated at Stoffel & Ophoff. In fact “414 Jack Jones” as he is now know, comes from renowned Stoffel & Ophoff winning lines which we will explore in more detail at a later time. “414 Jack Jones” was timed in at 21.25 that day and returned, as Geoff himself describes “The pigeon returned in superb condition - minimal weight loss - tight feathered - bright eyed - and not over eager to the drinker or the feed trough - an absolute credit to the International convoyers.”
G.M. Preece and Son
At 21.43 that same day in that same race a pigeon was timed in by Stoffel & Ophoff themselves in Dorsten, North Rhine-Westphali to take 13th German National. Two lofts in two countries that any serious International Fancier needs to keep a very close eye on.
